Simple Tricks for Overcoming Dental Anxiety Forever

Simple Tricks for Overcoming Dental Anxiety Forever

Dental phobia is a common fear that people usually face. Studies suggest that 9 out of 10 people experience some form of dental anxiety. Dental anxiety affects people of all ages.

  • Discuss your dental fears with your dentist

It is important, to be honest with your dentist about your fears and what your anxiety triggers may be. Your dentist understands your concerns and wants to help you overcome them so he or she can make sure your oral health is good. Don’t hesitate to discuss any anxieties you have with your dentist so you can work together to find solutions.

  • Agree on a signal

If you experience any discomfort or anxiety during a procedure in a dentist’s office, it can not only make it more difficult for you to relax but also make your dentist’s job more difficult. To avoid such situations, it’s important to talk about your fear of the dentist before the procedure begins. Talk about what makes you feel anxious and what can be done to make you feel more comfortable during the procedure. Also, agree on a signal that will let your dentist know that you are uncomfortable. This will give them a chance to stop the procedure and address your anxiety as soon as possible.

  • Take a friend or family member with you for support

Having someone by your side can help ease your anxiety. When undergoing dental treatments, you might not be able to distract yourself from the sights and sounds around you. Instead, think about the person you’re with or talk to your dentist and ask them questions to take your mind off of the process. This can help you relax, and you might find that the process gets easier each time you visit.

You can also bring a friend or loved one so that you’re not alone when you have your procedure done. If you’re nervous about meeting a new dentist, the other person can talk to him or her on your behalf. He or she might also remind you to breathe and relax throughout the treatment. The other person can hold a hand during the appointment, or you can sit together while you both receive treatment. Your friend might also be able to help you remember to stay calm by talking to you and encouraging you to remain calm and relaxed throughout the process.

  • Bring distractions to occupy your mind

There are many forms of distraction that you can take with you to the dental clinic. Put on soothing music or sounds on your phone and listen to it throughout the treatment sessions. You can also bring a book or magazine to read. You can even time yourself to see how long it took for the procedure to finish and then reward yourself with a scoop of ice cream once you reach the expected downtime. This will help you tolerate the procedure better. Remember that it’s normal to feel nervous before a dental treatment appointment. But keep in mind that regular dental visits can keep your mouth, teeth, and entire body healthier for longer!

  • Consider sedation dentistry

If you need to go through extensive dental treatments, consider sedation dentistry to help ease your fear or anxiety. Sedation helps relax your body and will keep you calm and relaxed during the procedure so you won’t feel any pain or discomfort. It can also help you avoid gagging or any movements that can disrupt the whole treatment. Sedation is typically administered through a mask placed over your mouth. It takes you to an unconscious state where you will still be awake but will not be able to remember the procedure. Talk to your dentist to see if this type of dental service is right for you.
